A Big Change

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Puppies
After having lived my entire life (sans vacations) within the state of Arizona, I now find myself living in Midland, TX.

How the heck did this happen?

The [nameless for the purpose of this blog] company I work for has paid to move me here. It is a rare thing for this particular business to do, but they needed an experienced manager -- and, frankly, the money was too sweet an incentive for me to pass up. I was looking for a new challenge, and this fits the bill quite nicely. The weather here is perfect (right now) and, unlike the city I came from, they actually know how to build a useful freeway system here.

Anyway, with all of the transplanted Californians streaming into the Phoenix area, AZ was beginning to turn a bit too "purple" for my taste. It's good to be in a solid red-state again.

It's like a whole other country!

In response to a fellow blogger's recent statement, "Obama would have some trouble leading a bunch of kindergartners out of a classroom during a fire drill," I have imagined what it would be like if Obama really was in that situation . . . and it was not a drill.

Obama: Okay, children. We’re uh, uh, uh, we’re going to exit the building now. [Pause] We — we — we’s, uh, I, uh, I know that some of you want to go that way; [Pause for effect] and I, uh, I know that others of you want to go in a different direction — and that’s okay; I understand that. But, uh, what we as Americans have to do, is, uh, we have to act collectively . . . uh, you know, for the uh, uh, the common good. So, what I propose to do is, uh, uh, if — if you will [*crackle*] agree to do your part [*sizzle*], and uh, uh, uh, commit to performing community service [*choke*], now wait — now wait just a moment; hear me out, now [*sputter*][*gasp*][*wheeze*]. Just a couple hundred hours per year, that’s all. [Pause] That’s all. You guys [*collapse*], you, uh, you’re young — you’re young, and let me tell you ["Mr. Obama, I can't breathe!"], there is nothing more, uh, uh, gratifying ["Help!"], more, uh, uplifting ["I'm burning up!"], more, uh, uh, uh, uh, [Pause], more, uh, you know; it, it, it’s a special time ["Now I lay me down to sleep"] in, in, in your lives is what I’m trying to say; and you [*rattle*], you should grab that opportunity. So what do you say, kids? Can we all work to serve our fellow [Long pause] uh, uh, uh, uh, kids?

Matthew, Chapter 5 - The Sermon on the Mount

1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples and major campaign contributors came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth and, reading from a teleprompter, taught them, saying,
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of health care.
4 Blessed are they that mourn the demise of capitalism: for they shall be comforted with freebies from the State.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth through affirmative action.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled with victim-hood and decks of race cards.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy, and food stamps, and, if necessary, commuted sentences.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see Obama.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, including the anti-Semite ex-President Carter: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of reparations and a black separatist State.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake, for you were my Pastor.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in welfare: for so persecuted they the minorities which were before you.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, or have given a brother high blood pressure, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, as were the trans fats before it, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid: even Detroit, Yo!
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house, and it leaveth no carbon footprint.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works — for the workers control the means of production — and glorify your Father which is in The White House.
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets, or the Constitution: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil the Prophecy of Barack.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. If you interpret that to mean welfare for all, so be it.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven; you are scum but I forgive you: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven and in the union hall.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Community service or else!
21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: thus were included Ramos and Compean despite the justification of their actions.
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment, but not the death penalty: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire — or hate crimes legislation.
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, $2300 max, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift: pay your debts, pay your taxes.
25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him, at least during the general election campaign; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, to stand beside Rezko, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing in capital gains.
27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery, as did mine opponent; I’m just sayin’:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. That’s why me and Scarlett just text.
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Word up.
30 And if thy right wing offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Don’t lose yo’ soul!
31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: furthermore, let there be an airtight pre-nup.
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery: Damn straight! That kitty belongs to me!
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: and the schools shall make thine children do the same.
34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: nor by the Es-ca-lade; for it is God’s ride.
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King: nor by The White House; for it is his crib.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. Only I, the bi-racial one may do so.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Do not ask, do not tell.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth, and a kick in the ass for the fool what smoked all my stuff.
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. You have not the right of self-defense.
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also, lest someone like myself step in and really take your ass to the cleaners.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain, as long as it be in a green vehicle.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away, and engage not in deceptive lending practices.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy, usually by the demon right wing.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; and meet with them minus any preconditions.
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust, and practiceth moral relativism without regard to the real world consequence.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? Yeah, that’ right; I slanged it.
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? All hail the tax collector!
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Well, you crackas can be — literally — pale reflections of my perfection.

The Sermon on the Plain, Luke 6:17-49 (King James Version):

17 And he came down with them, and stood in the plane, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of reporters out of all Washington DC and New York City, and from the sea coast of California, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;
18 And they that were vexed with unclean spirits and partisanship: and they were healed.
19 And the whole multitude of celebrities sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.
20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of increased government spending.
21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled with free food at school. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh at those that work for a living.
22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake: for you are Democrats.
23 Rejoice ye in that election day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in entitlements: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets perpetuate the cycle of dependence.
24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation and have thus triggered the windfall profits tax.
25 Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger when all of the corn is turned into ethanol. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep when the capital gains tax rises by 10%.
26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets, such as at the Republican National Convention.
27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you. They, too, may suckle at the government’s teat.
28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you; but if they be Conservatives you may institute a fairness doctrine.
29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also; unless they utter an epithet — then it is a hate crime.
30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. “Imagine no possessions”.
31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise; but use protection.
32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them, and it shall remain legal in Times Square.
33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, as a community organizer for instance, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. Worry not, for the bailout will always be there.
35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. That is my foreign policy.
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful — while performing your mandatory community service.
37 Judge not guilty, and ye shall not be judged guilty: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned to death — no matter how heinous your crime: snitch not, and ye shall not be snitched upon: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again; unless homeboy had his thumb on the scale, know what I’m sayin’?.
39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? The results of my campaign will provide the answer.
40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master, especially if you have Dumbo ears.
41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Yeah! Why you illin’? You think you all that?
42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye. And if you be a member of the NBA, lay claim to each of the children you have fathered.
43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit; but properly watered bud underneath the right sunlamp . . .
44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes, nor of a Moose’s toilet do they drill in ANWR.
45 A good man out of the good treasury of his nation bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart the Vice-President’s mouth speaketh, despite the four heart attacks visited upon him.
46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? such as voting down that pant-suited bitch.
47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them without thinking, I will shew you to whom he is like:
48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock, and secured the property from Tony Rezko for below market value: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock of corruption.
49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. [Maybe Katrina was HIS will!]

It’s a question of overreaction (Al Gore with his near-Biblical doom and gloom prophecies) versus denying the obvious (Rush Limbaugh with his ‘who are we with the hubris to think that we can ruin God’s creation?’). It’s a balancing act, between not giving in to group-think mentality and not turning a blind eye to what’s right in front of your face. There’s also the weighing of short-term and long-term concerns. How many children have died in Africa because the government banned the use of DDT to control malaria due to concerns over what spraying might have done to the environment?

The current cycle of global warming has been occurring since the start of the industrial revolution; therefore, it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that one is the cause of the other. What’s shocking is to see so many scientists jump on that bandwagon. It certainly is tempting to lump them into the category of baby-boomer environmentalists who were looking for a touchstone from which they could launch their agenda. Going forward they found a spokesman in one of their own — age and viewpoint-wise — in the person of the former Vice-President, and their movement developed its own kinetic energy. It also wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that peer pressure brought many of their fellows on board. When you have the leadership of a prestigious and respected organization calling the evidence “incontrovertible” (reflected on the populist side of the movement by the statement “the debate is over”), even responsible scientists can display the all too-human quality of capitulation to the prevailing mood around them. It’s so much easier when someone else has already done all of the work and mental heavy lifting for you.

The fact that most, if not all, of these same scientists are aware of historical climate studies involving the analysis of ice core samples — physical evidence — that clearly shows cycles of warming and cooling . . . that fact somehow gets lost or pushed to the side in this debate. It has already been revealed that some of the global warming proponents have been selectively including or excluding data based on what does or does not fit their climate change model. This brings up a question of ethics: Are they being responsible and conscientious, fudging numbers when necessary in order to warn us of all the very real damage our progress is causing? or, Are they spinning the evidence in order to advance an agenda, and justifying the deception as being for our own good?

What might be most telling are the proclamations by scientists that the evidence is “incontrovertible”. Good scientists test and retest and test again. They gather as much detailed data as is available, and where the data is incomplete they note that fact and temper their conclusions with that knowledge. They don’t state that their conclusions are 100% right when they know that they don’t have all the facts. Thirty years ago the scientific community announced that we were facing a period of cooling. They were wrong about that, as average temperatures have gone up since then. It’s a little hard to credit that over the past thirty years the scientific methods and the equipment technology employed have improved so much that now all of their measurements, and the conclusions drawn from them cannot or should not be disputed.

Despite the tremendous leaps in technology, methodology, data gathering capability, and accumulated knowledge within the scientific community over the past 150 years, one thing remains constant: They don’t know everything, and they never will. While their conclusions should not be dismissed out of hand, they also should be taken with a grain of sodium chloride.

Great Show!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Puppies

For our anniversary (15 years together) my wife and I saw Alison Krauss and Robert Plant in concert (in Phoenix) last night. The show was very very good. The opening act was Sharon Little, a quite good jazz-influenced singer-songwriter who was working as a waitress back in January and now has an album on CBS Records (two of the songs have appeared on CBS tv shows) and is living her dream. One of the best opening acts I have ever seen; a few of her songs were quite slo-o-w but the crack band always kept the beat & a groove going.

I had previously seen Robert Plant twice and Alison Krauss once; together they were excellent. Their album together, "Raising Sand", is recommended. When you peel away all of the bombast and excess of Led Zeppelin's sillier moments Robert Plant emerges as a true musician and an above-average singer; in this setting, with plenty of quieter moments and acoustic instrumentation, his facility as a performer stands out. Alison Krauss, the best country/bluegrass/folk singer there is, was in fine voice, despite constant problems with her monitor speakers (she had both floor speakers and earpieces). The entire show saw her making various (and apparently worked out ahead of time) hand gestures to the man running the stage soundboard; she was like a third-base coach in baseball throwing signals . . . and yet she never sang a wrong note or went off-key or slipped the rhythm of her performance. During the final encore Plant, having watched her emphatic gestures all night long, imitated her movements -- just for a second -- as a joke; that brought a laugh from the crowd and a smile (and maybe the slightest of hesitations in her singing) from Alison. She clearly was not happy with the sound, but a visually impaired person listening to the concert would never have known it. A true professional in the best sense of the word.

The band, led by rockabilly guitarist and producer T-Bone Burnette, was great. In addition to songs from their album together and some of Alison's solo work the duo performed some re-imagined versions of Plant's solo work and Led Zeppelin classics. The crowd was brought to its feet by "Black Country Woman" (about a woman from the "black country" section of England -- or maybe something else if you read it differently); it's a song I have always loved but which I thought was also fairly obscure for casual Plant/Zeppelin fans ... guess not. There were also several gospel/songs of faith numbers that highlighted how well their voices blend together. In the crowd of 5,500 there were two or three idiots but overall the audience, most of whom were older than me (and I'm 42) were well-behaved and appreciative. My wife, who loves Alison Krauss but didn't even remember the Robert Plant concert I dragged her to 12 years ago, enjoyed it as well.

Current polling has Obama winning 23 states plus Washington DC, for a total of 289 electoral votes; McCain is leading in 27 states with a total of 249 electoral votes. If Ohio, where Obama has a TINY lead, goes for McCain (they voted for Bush twice) they would end up tied: 269-269. [The tie would be broken by a vote in the House of Representatives, which would mean that Obama would win THE closest election in US history.]

Obama also has a slight lead in Virginia, a traditional red state; if Ohio and Virginia go for McCain, he beats Obama 282-256. McCain has a slight lead in Michigan, a traditional blue state; if he gets Ohio and Virginia, and Obama gets Michigan, then Obama squeaks a 273-265 win. Take that same scenario, give West Virginia to Obama and Colorado & New Mexico to McCain (a likely outcome given recent election results and the dead-heat status of the polls of those states); then McCain edges out Obama 274-264.

Bottom line: Ohio and/or Florida, where McCain has a lead that's a little bit stronger than Obama's lead in Ohio, will -- barring a major shift in the pulse of the electorate -- once again decide the entire election. With the support of popular Florida Governor Charlie Crist, McCain should take that state, which means that (as it did in '04) Ohio will be the final battleground. Whichever candidate wins that state takes the whole enchilada.

Liberty versus Equality

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Puppies
"Socialism values equality more than liberty."
  --  Dennis prager

From FDR and the enactment of Social Security, to LBJ and the War on Poverty, to Barack Obama and Health Care coverage for all -- liberals wallow in a sea of equality, somehow believing that sameness is the same thing as freedom. Somehow they manage to ignore or disregard the fact that forced equality restricts the freedom to decide. Every time this freedom is circumvented it diminishes one of our most cherished liberties: participation in the democratic process.

Ironically, Barack Obama wants it both ways: he is relying on the votes of those who are willing to give up some of their rights to self-determination in exchange for all of the good-things-from-government that he promises to deliver. That's something liberals would be wise to keep in mind when they waggle their accusing fingers and scream "power-grab by the executive branch" at the current administration. Obama is running on a promise to remove some of our freedom of choice -- a promise to make more government involvement in your life mandatory.

Then, of course, there is the cycle of dependence that is created by these programs. Democrats promise welfare in exchange for votes; when reelection time comes around they remind the electorate who is taking care of them, with the implication that all of that nannying is in danger of disappearing unless they stay in power.

How easy it seems for some to twist those words from the preamble to the Constitution "promote the general welfare" into "provide the general welfare". It is the job of government to help those who are unable to help themselves; it should never be the job of government to help those who are unwilling to help themselves. We ALL have the right to expect our fellow citizens to take personal responsibility for their own lives. We ALL should take umbrage when a judge decides that the people do not have the right -- the liberty -- to express their will.

Pete Rose belongs in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame -- as a player (not as a manager). The all-time leader in hits also holds several other records (games played, plate appearances, etc), including some that in all likelihood will never be broken; he's in the top 15 all-time in other categories (walks, runs scored, etc). He was Rookie of the Year, Batting Champion, League MVP, and a World Series winner.

He accomplished all of those things years before he made his mistake -- breaking the law and paying for it, both financially and with his freedom. It is a travesty that since then his hard-fought efforts have been disregarded this way. The list of accomplishments on the baseball diamond was the product of his adult lifetime's work; that collection of milestones and Pete himself, deserves a lot more respect than has been received up till now.

Put Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame -- where he belongs.

Love Of My Life

In the Led Zeppelin song, "The Ocean," Robert Plant sang:

"Now I'm singing all my songs to the girl that won my heart;
She is only three years old and that's a real fine way to start."

Of course he was referring to his daughter, Carmen.

Well, the girl that has won my heart is now eleven; she is my goddaughter, who I held on the day she was born. I love her as if she were my own -- and while I do not have any biological children, I feel that I've come to know a great deal of the joy and pride and sense of responsibility one feels as a parent.

My songs are for her.

Liberty Through Vigilance is inspired by a statement from Wendell Phillips, perhaps the most dedicated and forceful voice against slavery during the 19th century:

"Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty—power is ever stealing from the many to the few…. The hand entrusted with power becomes … the necessary enemy of the people. Only by continual oversight can the democrat [small "d"] in office be prevented from hardening into a despot: only by unintermitted Agitation [exercising 1st Amendment rights] can a people be kept sufficiently awake to principle not to let liberty be smothered in material prosperity."

I would add that "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty" applies equally to threats both domestic and foreign; pork-barrel spending, the creation of unnecessary departments -- as well as reducing the size of the military and being reluctant to back-up a diplomatic position with a show of strength -- occurs when lawmakers forget that basic truth. Vigilance requires focus and concision, perseverance and determination.

Wendell Phillips also had some words of wisdom that are especially apt for Father's Day:

"To be as good as our fathers we must be better. Imitation is not discipleship".

"The best education in the world is that got by struggling to get a living."

I am of white anglo-saxon protestant heritage, born in 1965, and have lived in Arizona my whole life. Politically, I am a moderate conservative with some libertarian leanings, and have always been registered as an independent. I am married; my wife and I have been together since 1993. My interests are playing guitar and bass, science fiction books, hockey, sports cars, and politics.

I support all of Arizona'a major sports teams, with the exception of football where my loyalties lie with the Miami Dolphins.

Music that swings -- good rock, jazz, and r&b --  along with some classical (Piano concertos and classical guitar) and select country music, is the music of my life.

I am a fan, nee fanatic, of Monty Python's Flying Circus, and of classic films.
